Jade is a term that refers to two distinct silicate minerals, jadeite and nephrite, which are both used as gemstones and have been carved for thousands of years. Jadeite is the rarer and more valuable of the two, and it comes in a variety of colors such as green (the most popular), white, lavender, black, and red. The primary source of jadeite is Myanmar (Burma). Nephrite is more common and typically occurs in shades of light to dark green, or grayish white, and is known for its toughness. Major sources of nephrite include China, Canada, Russia, and New Zealand. Jade holds immense cultural significance in China, where it is revered as a symbol of purity, virtue, health, and good luck, and is often carved into amulets, ornaments, and jewelry.
