The pearl is one of the two birthstones for the month of June, with the other being alexandrite. This timeless gemstone is a meaningful piece that is usually passed down for generations to come. Having been around for thousands of years, the ancient Greeks believed the pearls were the goddess of love Aphrodite’s tears of joy. Pearls are also used to represent purity, eternity and beauty.
QUALITY FACTORS
Color
The most familiar colors are white and cream (a light yellowish brown). Black, gray, and silver are also fairly common, but the palette of pearl colors extends to every hue. The main color, or bodycolor, is often modified by additional colors called overtones, which are typically pink (sometimes called rosé), green, purple, or blue.
Cut
Generally the more perfectly round in shape a pearl is, the more rare and prized it is.
